The recent changes in the national exit exams- PEP, have undoubtedly brought major changes within Jamaica's education system. This has left many parents on edge wondering ‘what changes will this bring for my child’, ‘will my child be able to exceed academic standards’ and ‘what are the benchmarks to be used for my child thinking critically’.
Simply put, critical thinking is ‘thinking outside the box’. It is not a “content” to be taught but rather a series of skills to be learnt. Teachers tend to put special emphasis on these skills at exam grades (Grades 4, 5 and 6) but in reality students should be learning and mastering these skills from the onset of kindergarten.
